28 January 2015

The following information reflects what is new in the edX Platform as of 28 January 2015.

Analytics

Data packages now include a .csv file of the email preference that each learner supplies when they enroll in your institution’s courses on edx.org. The file includes data collected across all of an institution’s edx.org courses. For more information, see Email Opt In Report in the edX Research Guide.

Documentation

Building and Running an edX Course

This guide now includes a new section about creating different course experiences for learners who are assigned to different cohorts. For more information, see Creating Cohort-Specific Course Content.

Open edX Developer’s Guide

To support packaged releases for Open edX better, the source files for the Open edX Developer’s Guide are now located in the GitHub edx-documentation repository.

EdX Learner’s Guide

Answers to frequently asked questions about the edX mobile app are now available in the If You Use the edX Mobile App section of this guide.

EdX Research Guide

This guide now includes a description of the new Email Opt In Report.

Insights

The learner engagement data computed for edX Insights is now updated as soon as weekly computations are complete. Previously, updates were delayed by as much as 24 hours. (AN-4150)

LMS

  • The first line of transcript files now appears for all videos. Previously, the first line did not appear if it contained a byte order mark. (TNL-935)
  • Grade reports can now be generated successfully for all courses. Previously, an error caused grade reports to fail for courses with problem display names that contained Unicode characters. (TNL-1196)

Mobile

The edX mobile app is now available for iPhone and Android smartphones. With the app, learners can view or download video lectures for your courses and watch them anytime, without an Internet connection. Many of the courses that are currently running on edx.org are ready for use with the app, and preparations to support mobile delivery are in progress for even more courses.

You and your enrolled learners can download the free edX mobile app from Google Play for Android smartphones and from the App Store for Apple iPhones. For answers to frequently asked questions about the mobile app, see If You Use the edX Mobile App section in the EdX Guide for Students.

Open EdX

As part of an accelerating effort to better support Open edX and packaged releases, we have moved the source files for the Open edX Developer’s Guide from the edx-platform repository to the edX- documentation repository.

Studio

  • If you include cohorts in your course, you can now assign different course content to different cohorts. See Creating Cohort-Specific Course Content for more details.
  • All courses created after 14 Jan 2015 now use the The New Key Introspection API format for internal course identifiers and the course URL. An example of the new URL format is: http://www.edx.org/courses/course-v1:edX+DemoX+Demo_2014/info.
  • MathJax, which Studio and the LMS use to render text as “beautiful math”, is now upgraded to version 2.4 from version 2.2. For more information, see the descriptions of MathJax 2.4 and MathJax 2.3. (OSPR-21)
  • When you create a new course in Studio, edit checks now identify special characters in the Organization, Course Number, or Course Run fields. An error message appears to prevent entry of spaces or characters such as !, ', (, or ). (SOL-233)
  • For LTI components, you can now set the new Accept grade past deadline setting to True or False. The default for this setting is True. Previously, grading always included learner submissions that were submitted after the subsection due date. (TNL-805)

EdX Website

People who have registered, but not yet activated, an edX.org account can now reset their passwords on the edx.org site. Previously, you received an error message if you tried to reset your password before activating your account. (ECOM-894)

XBlocks

All courses created after January 14, 2015 now use the The New Key Introspection API format to identify their component Xblocks.
